Code Romantic is a post-apocalyptic visual novel that teaches programming skills. Join the Human Defense Department's last ditch effort to save the world: by teaching the brightest students in the nation how to hack into the brains of the sentient machines destroying humanity. Follow the journey of Mina Lovelace as she seeks to prove herself worthy of following in her mother's footsteps. And also tries not to embarrass herself in front of Leon, her childhood crush, in the process!
Code Romantic is the first of a three-game series that teaches C# programming and computer science concepts. The educational content is based on the AP Computer Science exam and the curriculum of a college-level Computer Science I course.
Code Romantic launched on Steam and Itch.io for 9.99 USD on April 30th, 2020. The soundtrack is also available for 2.99 USD.
HISTORY
Code Romantic is the passion project of prettysmart games founder Miko Charbonneau. Despite earning her doctorate in Computer Science, Miko often felt intimidated during her programming education and found it difficult to memorize concepts without understanding their purpose. She also noticed many friends claiming they could never learn to code because it’s “too hard”, or they are “too stupid”. At the same time, Miko and her friends would spend hundreds of hours learning complicated magical systems in games just to spend more time with their favorite characters.
“What if a love story taught you to code?” she thought, and thus Code Romantic was born. Soon Miko enlisted Dale Lemieux to help with development and tools support. After working together on Top Dog: Lucky’s Charm, prettysmart games hired watercolor illustrator Allyson Kelley to bring the characters and world to life. Alex Liberatore was brought on board to provide the original soundtrack. Years of research went into the plot, puzzle design, art and animation. The first six chapters were released over time at itch.io until the rest of the game went into full production.
In 2019, Miko began streaming game development on her Twitch channel, including behind the scenes of Code Romantic. Code Romantic has been featured at GeekGirlCon, Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Game Devs of Color, and the VALA Redmond gallery.
